Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was an extremely popular first person shooter released in 2011. This game was released around a time when the U.S. was engaged in The Long War, in Afghanistan. Since this is a war game produce during a period of war I was interested in how the game’s was influenced by history during that time. Writer Michael Vlahos, discusses this in his article â€Å"What ‘Call of Duty’ Shows About How War Changed America†. The games of Call of Duty series sometimes assumes the role as a mirror for the United States in certain areas. The author suggests that the soldier’s representation in the game reflects the change in the current perceptions of soldiers. Due to the war, the soldiers lost their positive reputation in the eyes of the people. He suggests that the war wasn’t fought by the people, but by the government. In MW3, this change was shown through the campaign which didn’t include a traditional battle for freedom or the welfare of the public like other games such as Halo. The war was fought as a battle to the death against a Russian-led terrorist group that has caused carnage throughout the West. MW3 seemed to use the opposition’s situation as inspiration to make the game appear more harsh or violent and to help the story. The game hosted a warlike atmosphere with rubble and other signs of destruction throughout the streets. This setting aligns with our expectations and seems to be congruent with war.
